Everyone needs a hobby to distract and entertain.
Magic Trick - 1
You will need a) A strip of paper 1.5 inches wide and 3 inches long, b) A catsup bottle with a cap c) stackable objects such as checkers, poker chips, or quarters.
Place the strip of paper on top of the capped bottle so that the pulling end is longer than the other side. Stack the objects on top of the paper, making a great show of how easy it is to knock them off. Practise how many you can add and still pull off the trick. The higher the stack of objects the better the show. Challenge someone in your audience to remove the paper without toppling the stack of objects. Let several people try before you take your turn.
You the true believer in natural law will pull off the job. To remove the strip, moisten your index finger, so it sticks to the paper providing a better grip. Grasp the longer end of the paper, between your moist index finger and thumb, and bring your hand down toward the tabletop quickly. The trick is to move the strip out from under the objects as fast as possible. If you don't do this quickly you also will fail.
Magic Trick - 2
You will need a) a glass 2/3 full of water b) a playing card c) a ring of aluminum foil d) an uncooked egg. Fill the glass two thirds full of water and cover it with a playing card. Balance the egg, larger end down, in the ring of aluminum foil on the card. Place your middle finger against your thumb, then flick the card out from under the egg. The sharp blow makes the card fly off. The egg falls into the water unbroken. Break the egg later to prove it was not hard-boiled.
Magic Trick - 3
You will need 2) a smooth table surface b) 10 black checkers c) 2 red checkers. On the smooth surface stack one black checker followed by the red one. Place the remaining black checkers on top of the red one. Stand the other red checker on its edge and shoot it at the stack by pressing on its top and then letting your finger slide down around its edge. The checker should scoot out from under your finger with force. With practice, you can make a direct hit so that the curved side if the moving checker delivers a blow to the red checker in the pile. The red checker will be knocked from the pile without toppling the black ones.
Moving bodies will remain in motion and resting bodies will remain at rest unless an outside force acts upon them. Friction is the force that makes these tricks work. The friction between the objects and the paper they rest on is strong enough to cause the objects to fall when the paper moves. Eliminate this friction and there is no force acting directly on the stacked objects, so they won't move. In the first trick you reduce the friction by moving the paper very quickly. The other two tricks also work on reduced friction. The card in magic trick number 2 and the checker in magic trick number 3 are moved so quickly that the other objects merely follow the laws of gravity and behave as though no force has acted on them at all.
Master these easy to learn magic tricks and your off to a good start. Every trick and illusion demonstrates a scientific principle and the better you understand exactly what is happening and why, the better a performing magician you will become. I will continue to publish more easy to learn magic tricks so check back often to learn the next set of tricks that you can add to your repertoire.
