"How did you do that?" It's a question that a good magician will be asked many times. One of the best responses for is the following:
"Very well.
[smile and pause]
Did you enjoy it?"
This apparently simple response achieves several things.
- You have answered their question.
- You have not exposed any magic secrets.
- You have not come across as smug or arrogant.
- You have added a bit of humor to the situation.
- You have now turned the focus of attention onto the spectator rather than yourself.
- You appear genuinely interested in the spectator.
It's very important not to answer the question in a way that makes you come across as smug or arrogant. Many magicians answer this question with cheesy statements like "it's magic" or to dodge the situation with statements like "I can't tell you". If the spectator's question goes unanswered or dodged, an awkward situation arises. The last thing you need to do is leave your spectator with a bad taste in their mouth. An attitude of "I know something that you don't know" is a very unlikeable character trait. By turning the situation around and asking the spectator a question about themselves, you avoid a potentially awkward situation.
Remember, performing street magic is all about pleasing the spectator, not about the magician. You are there to put smiles on other peoples faces.
