Escapology

Escapology is a sub-genre of magic where the aim of the magician is to escape from a seemingly impossible or dangerous situation.

This can include jail cells, wooden trunks, coffins and tanks filled with water to name a few. Many times the magician may be bound in a straight jacket or handcuffs or bound in ropes or chains.

Some people argue that escapes aren't very entertaining. A magician is in cuffs one second and then releases himself. In the twenty first century it seems that magicians are generally more impressed with their own escapes than their audiences. What makes the effect interesting is the seemingly impossible conditions in which an escape is performed.

One of the issues surrounding escape artists that use handcuffs is that spectators tend to believe that they must be tricked in some way even if they are apparently supplied by a police department. Comedy can goes a long way in vivifying a staid performance.
